Developing Export Markets

A side effect of the advancing UK recession has been the fall in value of Sterling which makes British construction exports more competitive than they have been for many years.

As your company faces a decline in UK sales then now might be the time to consider exporting. Although this is a worldwide recession, there are still many opportunities for building products, design and construction services. India and China although facing a fall in their consumer markets still have strong development programmes. Many of the Middle Eastern countries have strong oil revenues and although activity is slowing it is still strong by UK standards. There are countries throughout the world with pro-British construction markets, legislation and standards based on British principals - Hong Kong and Singapore for example.

However, embarking on a programme of export can be expensive. You need to select your target markets carefully, ensure your offering is attractive to overseas customers, select the right partners, give them the support they need, and be patient. Most important of all, ensure that a suitable method of payment is in place.

The team at Competitive Advantage can help you with many of these areas. We have research partners in a number of countries and have experience of international business development. Our involvement can be as much or as little as you wish.
