Steve Miller has a wealth of business experience gained from a 35 year career in the construction products industry, working for Butterley Brick, Hanson Building Products, and HeidelbergCement.

He joined Butterley in 1972 as a trainee manager and progressed to Works Manager, Regional Production Manager, and in 1991 became Head of Environmental and Production Services.

With responsibility for providing environmental advice across the group, he oversaw the preparation and implementation of policies and programmes to deal with the new challenges presented by the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and increasing stakeholder awareness and concern about ‘green’ issues.

Working for Hanson he became Technical Director in 2002 and Head of Sustainability in 2004. Here he faced a further set of challenges, including the Integrated Pollution Protection and Control Directive, which required all brick factories to submit detailed applications for a Pollution and Prevention Control permit.

He set up an energy team and developed systems and procedures to manage the Company’s involvement with Climate Change Agreements and the European Emissions Trading Scheme, key aspects of the fight against climate change.

With sustainability now coming to the fore, he was responsible for the Company’s sustainability strategy and its implementation, supporting operational, sales and marketing teams. This include a programme of certification to ISO 14001 across concrete and clay product manufacturing sites, essential to drive environmental improvement and enhance the sustainability credentials of products in the market place.

In 2008 he took early retirement, and set up his own consultancy - SAM Sustainability.

As a consultant, Steve’s wealth of experience is available to help resolve issues relating to all aspects of sustainable construction, product, and environmental management. This can cover areas such as advice, development and review of strategies and performance, and provision of training. He is effective at motivating and communicating with personnel at all levels, having managed teams for most of his career.
